Many homeowners set blocks on top of flat soil. The wall looks fine at first, then tips forward after the first winter. We dig a trench and bury the first block course below grade. Next, we compact clean gravel under the blocks so they sit on a solid, level base.
A wall that stands perfectly vertical has no resistance against soil pushing from behind. We lean each course of blocks slightly backward into the hill. This angle is called a batter. Also, this tilt uses the weight of the blocks to fight the soil load naturally.
Blocks alone cannot hold back a tall, heavy bank of wet clay soil. For walls taller than three feet, we unroll geogrid sheets between the block courses. Next, we stretch the grid back into the hill and compact soil over it. This anchors the wall face to the hill directly.

Geogrid is a plastic mesh sheet that is laid between block rows and buried in the backfill soil. It ties the wall face back into the soil mass so the wall acts as a unit instead of a row of individual blocks. We use it on walls taller than three feet or on walls holding back steep, heavy clay banks.
We lay a layer of filter fabric behind the block face before backfilling. This stops small soil particles from washing through the joints. Also, spraying a non-toxic horticultural vinegar into the open joints kills weed roots in the gravel without damaging the concrete blocks.
